recently The Straits Times forum has been flooded by the topic on filial piety.
it all started with the ad on tv...
with the slogan "How one generation loves, the next generation learns".

as i read the posts, i have to urge to write in to stforum...
to rebute those ppl who viewed it negatively or criticised it.
in my point of view, those ppl voiced their opinions as if they dont have grandparents.
sorry to say that.
but they really portray that image of them being ignorance to the daily routines of the elderly...
maybe i shldnt say daily routines... cause not everyone has the chance or honour to enter into the elderly lives...

i'm shocked at some their comments:

1) "... changing times require a redifinition of filial piety... ..."
my comments for (her) this writer: u means the definition of filial piety can change as time goes by???
children are filial to their parents by looking after them when they're old... i mean thr actions.
i wont be shocked if she added that the new definition of filial piety means providing a maid to look aft the elderly or giving them a monthly allowance or a just visit once a week/a month.
and mind you, she said her upbringing was traditionally Confucian.

2) "Shouldn't the authorities have thought of a happier way to teach and instil filial piety - perhaps featuring a happy and well-adjusted family visiting the grandparents, and the parents explaining to their children why it is important to spend more time with the elderly to create precious memories for all."
my comments for (her) this another writer: stop dreaming! be realistic!
u mean in your life, everything is smooth-sailing for u?
the ad merely portrayed the dark side of a real-life situation... the unhappy side.
and it's present in this society.
people actually learn more from failure than success. (if may sounds exaggerated)
what i'm trying to say is people will more likely rmb the ad
if it portrayed the sad issue of the elderly lives... which is not commonly seen by the public.
than a happy one. the impact is there, for this ad.

i agree with one of my supporter, Yeh, who commented on this writer that "she suggested a married couple must leave the parents' home, and fulfilling one's filial duty merely means visiting elderly parents, instead of supporting and caring for them." good one.

to me, i find those people arguing that the message conveyed by the ad is distorted, left them disturbed, and irrelevant, i find them wasting their time...
and they once again prove that...
they do not understand the term "filial piety".
since they have time to comment negatively on the ad,
i wonder if they have time to show their family what filial piety means thr actions.

the ad is not showed to let the public learn about filial piety.
it is there to remind ppl to take time off their busy lives, to reflect on their duties for their parents.
duties are up to how individuals perceive them.
i shouldn't waste my time trying to knock some sense into those ppl as mentioned above.

My slogan is: How one generation loves, the next generation learns... and loves. And the cycle goes on.
for me, the best way to learn about filial piety is to invite the elderly into your lives.
and i'm glad i did.
